Eat, Drink, Be Merry....and Volunteer!
We had vegetarian and vegan food for all to enjoy, and entertainment by one of our volunteer divers Billy Arcila, a classical guitarist. Laura Angelini was the master of ceremonies. The event was a huge success, with volunteers Scott Sheckman, Jennifer Dawson, Erika Marchino, Jennifer Lyons, Colin Biroc, and Robin Bronner spending significant amounts of their time to help coordinate and manage the silent auction, ticket sales, and performed all kinds of tasks to keep the event flowing smoothly.
Several people generously provided significant items for our auction: Matt Donegan, Michael Voorhees, Elizabeth and Duffy Healy, Rex Levi, Dawn Navarro, and Wyland.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Ericka Noriega and the people of the Aquarium for letting us use the facility for free!
As founder and president of the organization I gave a short talk about OD, and presented some awards to our longtime volunteers:
Crewmembers of the Year: Jeff Connor and Don Robarge
Crewmembers of the Decade: Jim Lieber and John Milligan
Chris Aultman (helicopter pilot with Sea Shepherd and ODA Board member) talked about his love of the oceans and how he came to work with these ocean organizations.
After that, Captain Watson entertained with his stories of past and present Sea Shepherd exploits. ODA is very grateful to Paul for donating his time and energy, taking time out of his busy schedule to help us make this such a huge success.
Thank you to everyone who came out, supported us, and told their friends about how ODA is making a significant difference here in our own backyard (we call it Southern California) – but we all know that all the waters of the world's oceans are connected. From the mountain streams, to the great rivers, they all lead to the sea, and the only way to keep the seas clean is to start with your own backyard.
We are grateful to everyone who participated and look forward to the next celebration!
