Kids can do some pretty amazing things for the oceans!
Case in point: Last year, the students at Santiago Middle School held a fundraiser and gave the money they raised to their chosen charity, which was Ocean Defenders Alliance (ODA). Two teachers brought several students to meet me at the ODA boat, where they presented me with a check for $700! Wow – that’s enough to fill the boat’s gas tanks a couple times!
I wanted to thank the students, so the teachers arranged for me to give a presentation to all of the 7th graders.
Just a few days ago, on February 22nd, I spoke to roughly 450 kids during four classes!
It was a lot of fun, and it was rewarding to hear that many of them want to do something to help out the oceans. I’m convinced there are many future active Ocean Defenders in that school!
I want to thank Holly Mikkelsen for leading the classes and for making the arrangements for me to talk to so many young people about the importance of stewarding our coastal waters.
