In an incredible show of teamwork and dedication, our team of six divers from Ocean Defenders Alliance (ODA) completed an intensive underwater cleanup at Hanauma Bay, one of Hawaii’s most pristine marine sanctuaries.
In just under two hours, we managed to remove some of the most unusual and hazardous debris from the bay—including a car tire, a bicycle fender, and an astounding 200 yards of discarded fishing line!

This February 23rd cleanup was part of ODA’s ongoing commitment to protect Hanauma Bay’s delicate ecosystem. As the only non-governmental organization ever granted a special permit to clean this protected marine area, we take our responsibility seriously.
The bay, known for its vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life, attracts visitors from all over the world. Unfortunately, pollution from human activity continues to threaten its health, making our work all the more important.

Even though we were a small team, we proved that a few dedicated individuals can make a significant impact. Within just two hours, we pulled out a car tire—something that could have caused real damage to the bay’s fragile coral ecosystem.
Along with it, we recovered a bicycle fender, a reminder of how debris can find its way into even the most unexpected places, showing just how far-reaching the consequences of human activity can be.
One of the most concerning finds was the 200 yards of discarded fishing line. This kind of debris is particularly dangerous, as it easily entangles sea turtles, fish, and other marine life. We worked swiftly to remove every length of line we could find, knowing that each piece taken out meant a safer environment for the bay’s inhabitants.
The success of this cleanup was a testament to the skill and dedication of our team. It’s because of our expertise in underwater conservation that ODA was entrusted with the special permit to perform cleanups in this protected area. Every time we dive, we work diligently to keep Hanauma Bay free from harmful waste, all while respecting the fragile ecosystem that makes this place so special.
