On June 23rd our team of Oahu volunteer divers continued their efforts to remove fishing lines from a place we call Spitting Caves.
While we already posted a story and photos about that day [check it out here – great photos, too!], our underwater videographer Ken Staples recently sent me some video clips he shot that day as well. I thought you’d find it interesting to see how it looks to the divers as they meticulously remove hundreds of feet of this fishing line every time they visit this site.
You will see what a laborious job it is to remove the lines without harming the corals, and also how this ghost gear can impact the fish and other wildlife as well.
No doubt your heart will go out to this pufferfish who had a hook with line caught in her mouth. Did you know: Pufferfish are a stout-bodied marine or freshwater fish that typically have spiny skin. These fish will inflate itself like a balloon when threatened. This one must have known we were there to help, not hurt!
